Hometown USA Award

An award for Boy Scouts

The Hometown U.S.A. Award is a joint program between Keep America Beautiful Inc. (KAB) and the Boy Scouts of America. It is designed to give recognition to the outstanding efforts of Scouts in their communities in regard to citizenship and environmental improvement.

Requirements

  1. Merit badges. Earn three merit badges from the following list of twelve: Citizenship in the Community, Communications, Environmental Science, Fish and Wildlife Management, Forestry, Gardening, Geology, Landscape Architecture, Nature, Plant Science, Public Speaking, Soil and Water Conservation.
  2. Community service project. In addition to earning the merit badges, a Boy Scout is required to perform a community service project. The project should involve a minimum of eight hours of time, two of which must involve management planning, with the other six consisting of carrying out the project. It should help keep America beautiful and benefit the community either physically or financially. One way to do this is to plan the community service project as part of Keep America Beautiful Week or Public Lands Day.

Getting the Patch

Scouts must complete the Hometown U.S.A. Award application form and present it to their Scoutmaster or troop advancement chairman.

In order to qualify for the award, Scouts must have successfully completed the requirements as outlined. The troop advancement chairman will know which merit badges each Scout needs in order to qualify.

It is suggested that the community service project be under the overall direction of a natural resources professional or other qualified adult supervisor. After completing the project, the adult supervisor should sign a statement that the project has been completed and meets the requirements of the project sponsor.

Any Scout who is interested in this special award may contact Mrs. Pepka (CheriScout@aol.com) for a resource list and list of recommended projects.  Or you can visit the following web site to download the application: http://www.scouting.org.

Congratulations to:

·        Zack Landes for achieving Tenderfoot rank.

·        David Bamford our newest Eagle Scout effective June 17, 2003.

Camp Parsons 2003

The year 2003 was Camp Parson's 85th season. Camp Parsons’ first camping season was 1919,  that is a lot of years of Boy Scout history with good camping memories. This year, Troop 498 had 32 Scout with 5 full-time adult leaders and 6 part-time adult leaders in attendance throughout the week.  Camp started as usual with check-ins and swim checks.  Our troop was first in line and breezed through all the requirements.  Sunday evening started as usual with the all-camp campfire which included skits and songs.

Monday morning started early at 6:30 am with Mr. Preuss's airhorn, as did every morning thereafter.  Breakfast was over by 8:30 followed by merit badges and advancements that started at 9:00 am, 10:00 am, and 11:00 am Monday thru Thursday. Troop 498 worked hard and completed approximately 75 merit badges, many advancements, and about 15 partials. This was excellent work for the boys especially, since this was the first time many of our scouts had been to summer camp.  These merit badges and advancements will be awarded at the next Court of Honor in September.

After lunch everyday was troop time from 1:30 to 3:40. That was when the troop signed up for different events to do around camp.  These activities included the pier dive, canoe swamp, rifle shoot, archery, wall climb, and field games to mention a few.  After that, until 5:00, was open time for the scouts to do what ever they wished.  Every evening we also had troop time from 7:30 to 8:30.

Of course, some of the best memories came from Friday's Hulabulu games and races where Troop 498 did very well.  This included Frank Parizek's first place in the baton woodcarving contest, the troop's 2nd place in the relay race, and 5th in the octopus cup canoe race.  Wait till next year Camp Parson!  The adults took 1st place in the Caveman Golf Tournament where Mr. Heien's golf clubs took first place (thanks to Tiger Rock's Cavemans pro shop).  Best of all, Troop 498 took first place in the Overall Troop Competition this year. This competition is based on the total scores from Friday's field games where the troop's patrols competed. I believe that is the first time in many years that troop 498 has earned first place in that event.  Overall Camp Parson's 85th year was excellent and created lasting memories for the Scouts and the adults.

Please bring your photos of camp Parsons to share at our next court of honor.
Mr. Preuss

Attention LIFE scouts:

Life to Eagle Seminar will be held on October 2 -  7-8:30pm

Location:  Sammamish Hills Lutheran Church,  A $5.00 registration fee will be needed.

Adult Opportunity:

Do you like Popcorn?  It doesn’t matter!  Our troop could use a popcorn Kernel – a fun way to help the boys earn their way to camp.  The popcorn kernel organizes and facilitates the council sponsored money earning popcorn sales for Boy Scouts.  Please let Mr. Johnson or Mr. Teel know that you will help!

This Troop Newsletter STILL needs an editor.  It could be YOU!

The newsletter is your opportunity to make a contribution to the troop, This task helps you

·         keep informed

·         get to know other adults on the committee

·         hear about the outings first hand

Communication in the troop is important so all boys can be part of outings and events.  This adult position is simple to do - attend the monthly adult committee meeting, assemble the information and send out via e-mail.  Please let Mr. Schoot, Mr. Johnson or Mrs. Pepka know you are interested, and they will be happy to explain how this important troop contribution can be in your trusted hands.

Well our year is 2/3rds over and we will be meeting back in School on the 17th, just in time for our Court of Honor.  The weather has been great and its time to get back out on the trail and enjoy it.  Don’t forget to sign up for the beautiful hike on Mt Rainier at Paradise and also the overnighter to Hyas Lake.  This overnighter is a gentle two mile hike and good for the young Scouts.  Older Scouts who want a challenge could push on to Tuk Lake.  It is Re-charter time again and Mrs. McMahon has prepared and distributed to those Scouts attending recently the package of materials.  Training, adults need to be trained and there are numerous opportunities starting this month.  Please don’t hesitate to attend.  The Troop needs your support in making it successful and only by having trained leadership can it function.  The Dutch Oven desserts prepared by the Scouts last week were awesome!  Thanks Daniel for the great cookoff.  And lets welcome Ian Spencer as our newest SPL and give him all our support.
