TIPS FOR SECURING BOATS

Tips for securing your boat:

You need to tie the boat in a balanced position and prevent her from tipping to the side or fore and aft. You should be just on the bottom when you tie the boat.

If you are close to the slip framing you can lean slightly to one side, as near to her normal trim as possible, and tie to the frame. Don’t forget the padding. If this is not possible due to the hull length, draft and freeboard height, or rigging, or if you are too late to pull her to the side,  you may need to stablilize the boat without allowing it to contact the slip frame. For stabilizing without leaning on a frame or wall, the best way is to use lines tied hard abreast as close to horizontal, and  as square to the beam as possible. If the mast and stays are well founded, a line can be led from just above the step. Cleats and winches can be used as well. If you do it correctly there should be a small horizontal loading of these points. Tie as close to straight across from on board securing points as possible. Fore and aft stability is done with lines from bow and stern cleats, or a harness under her bow and stern, which are tied to the upper or walk level of the slip frame. The more vertical you can make these lines the better.
