Boy Scouts track down missing woman on Blake Island.
Scouts from one
of our own units, Troop 570, put some of their scouting skills to the test on
Saturday, May 30 and showed that they take the motto of
"Be Prepared" to heart! Their story was covered in the Kirkland
Reporter, the Seattle
PI web site and on TV by Q-13

2009 District Volunteer Recognition Dinner. On Thursday,
April 30th, around 230 adults and youth attended this annual event,
celebrating the accomplishments of some of our district's members in this
past year. For a list of this year's award winners as produced on

Sammamish Trails District Pinewood Derby May 2nd. Racing
fans from Redmond and Kirkland mark their calendars for the first Saturday
in May every year as they await the racing event that has many sitting on
the edge of their seats! No, it's not the Indianapolis 500 but the
Sammamish Trails District Pinewood Derby. This year the race was held May
2nd at Rairdon's Dodge Chrysler Jeep of Kirkland. Sixty-seven Scouts
participated representing 16 units in highly competitive heats between the
Tiger, Wolf, Bear and Webelos ranks with final heats to determine the
District Champion. District Champions for 2009 are: Mychal M. of Pack 546,
First Place; Nick B. of Pack 595, Second Place; Sam F. of Pack 559, Third
Place; and Nick H. of Pack 591, Fourth Place. The event was managed by
Eastlake High School Senior Jordan Thomas, with the help of Russ Norman,
Vince Wanamaker and George Christ of Northwest Scouters; and hosted by
Rairdon's Dodge Chrysler Jeep of Kirkland.

Eagle Scout Recognition Banquet. Honor the current class of
Eagle Scouts at the 2009 Eagle Banquet on Thursday, May 28, 2009 at the
Museum of Flight. A 9/11 hero and Eagle Scout, Scott
Strauss, is the Keynote Speaker for the evening. New eagles will
be hosted and their dinners will be sponsored by adults from the business
community. This is a FREE event for the new Eagles. Parents are invited
for a special discounted price to the reception (with heavy hors
d'oeuvres) and program. New Eagles and parents please register

Silver
Beaver Award Each year the districts within the Chief
Seattle Council nominate dedicated volunteers for recognition. The Silver
Beaver Award is presented for distinguished service to young people.
Nation-wide more than 50,000 recognitions have been conferred to date.
Sammamish Trails has the privilege of recognizing 3 individuals this year
who have given exceptional service to our district for many years. Please
join us in congratulating our 2008 Silver Beaver Award recipients: Nancy Brooks,
Mark Verdeck, and Rich Whitehill. These three individuals have
given many hours of their time to the district to ensure that your
children have the best program that scouting can offer. The district is a
much better place because of their dedication.

Venture Crews: Youth
Powder Horn Opportunity July 6-11!! This summer, in Marin
Council's Camp Tamarancho, located just north of the San Francisco Golden
Gate Bridge, two crews in this pilot course (normally twelve participants)
will be comprised entirely of youth. These crews will function just like
the adult crews and have the same experiences. Follow the link above

Troop
Committee Challenge: This training is a fun way to build your
team, whether you are new or a seasoned Committee Member. We bring this
valuable training to you!
SAVE THE DATE! Merit Badge Weekend is moving to the Fall starting
this year. The event will be October 23-25. Make sure to include this in
your Troop Calendar planning! We are planning on some great new merit
badges, including Muzzle Loading and Woodworking.
| WashJam 2009 -- it's coming
August 20-23, 2009! Got it on your calendar yet? For only the
second time in Washington State History, the Boy Scouts of America will
host this all-state Jamboree. Co-sponsored by the Chief
Seattle Council and Pacific Harbors Council, WashJam will attract youth
and leaders from all over the Puget Sound region. Each will assemble at
Fort Lewis Army Base, just south of Tacoma, Washington on August 20-23,
2009, for the most exciting Scouting event of the year. Check out the web

Register
Now for National Jamboree 2010! The 100th birthday of
Boy Scouts of America will be in 2010. To help celebrate, there will
be National Scout Jamboree in Fort AP Hill, Virginia July 25th thru
August 10th of the same year. Chief Seattle Council will be taking 5
troops. Scoutmasters have been selected and applications are now
open for youth that may be interested in attending. Please select

District
Awards and Recognition. As a volunteer driven organization, Boy
Scouts of America strives to recognize its outstanding volunteers. At the
link provided, you will find nominations forms for many awards, both for
outstanding work at the unit level, and exemplary leadership at District
level. To recognize outstanding contributions at the unit level,
consider nominating a volunteer for the Spark Plug award. Each level of
scouting leadership is recognized through Cubmaster, Cub Leader,
Scoutmaster, Scout Leader and Venturing awards. District involvement is
recognized with the District Award of Merit or the Blue Heron awards. If
