Scouting For All Ages

Membership in the Boy Scouts of America is open to boys 7 to 20 years of age, girls 14 to 20 years of age, and adults 18 years of age and up. The chart below lists the detailed age, grade, and gender requirements for each unit type, as well as for adult leaders. Cub Scout Pack Tiger Cub: Boys who are under the age of 8, have completed kindergarten or are in the first grade, or are age 7.
Cub Scout: Boys who have completed first grade but have not completed third grade, or are age 8 or 9.
Webelos Scout: Boys who have completed third grade but have not completed fifth grade, or are age 10 but are not yet 11-1/2.
Boy Scout Troop Boys who have completed the fifth grade and are at least 10 years old or are age 11 or have earned the Arrow of Light Award and are at least 10 years old, but have not reached age 18.
Varsity Team Boys who are at least 14 years of age and not yet 18.
Venture Crew Boys and girls who are at least 14 years of age and have completed the eighth grade or are 15 years of age and not yet 21.
Adult Leaders Men and women 21 years of age or older for all positions, except assistant Scoutmasters, assistant den leaders, assistant Cubmasters, assistant Webelos den leaders, and assistant Varsity Scout coaches, who must be 18 or older.

How to Join the Boy Scouts of America

  1. Select a unit to join. You should speak with youth and adult members of the unit, and attend at least one meeting or activity of the unit, prior to submitting a membership application.
  2. Obtain the appropriate Youth Application or Adult Application from the unit or print a membership application.
  3. Obtain from the unit one of the following forms, or print by following the appropriate link, the Personal Health History Class 1 form or the new Annual Health and Medical Record (to be required beginning in January 2010). Frequently asked questions about the new Annual Health and Medical Record.
  4. Carefully read all instructions and fill out the membership application completely. Be sure to complete both copies of the application, or complete one original and make photocopy (one copy is for the unit to keep and one is submitted to the District for processing.)
  5. Carefully read all instructions and fill out completely the Personal Health History Class 1 or the Annual Health and Medical Record.
  6. Determine the amount of the current year's membership fee and the amount for a subscription to Boy's Life. The fee schedules are on page 3 of the Youth Application and on page 2 of the Adult Application. Checks should be made out to "Boy Scouts of America" or BSA.
  7. Turn in to the unit the completed Application, Personal Health History Class 1 or Annual Health and Medical Record, and fee payment.
