Mercer Island Canoe Race Sunday, September 20, 2009 Scouting and Venture Units: Join the Annual Canoe Relay Race Around Mercer Island Winning Scout Team Inherits the Prestigious Reese Martin Cup Sunday, September 20th 2009 Start time: 9:00 AM Sponsored by Troop 457, Mercer Island The Race: The relay consists of five legs, circumnavigating Mercer Island in Lake Washington. Two-person teams paddle each leg, changing teams at the mandatory stops listed below. As we did last year, teams will start together at each waypoint. The course is approximately 13 miles.
Canoes: Canoes will be rented at the Enatai boathouse and will be open, without outriggers, floats, stabilizers, motors, skegs or rudders. Troop 457 will make reservations for canoe rentals. Rentals include paddles and personal floatation devices for paddlers. Each team will need one canoe (paddled by relay teams of two Scouts each). Logistics and Safety: Units are responsible for transporting canoe teams to and from waypoints. We will need safety power boats (?spotter boats?) to travel with the team canoes, in order to provide assistance in the event of a capsize or other difficulty. We will need approximately one spotter boat for two canoe teams. Towing canoes with the power boat or changing out paddlers while underway would be disqualifying, although paddler teams can be transported between waypoints in a power boat. All participants in canoes and boats must wear personal floatation devices and observe safe boating laws and practices. Canoe teams must have basic water safety knowledge (see Canoeing merit badge requirements) and basic canoeing skills. At least one adult in each spotter boat should have completed the BSA Safety Afloat and Safe Swim Defense courses (available on line). Post-Race BBQ Picnic: The race will be followed by a BBQ picnic at Luther Burbank Park after all teams have finished. The Reese Martin Cup, named in honor of the prominent Mercer Island Scouter, will be presented to the winning team. We hope to continue the tradition of having Mrs. Pat Martin, wife of the late Reese Martin, present the trophy. Additional Comments: This round-the-island relay has been a fixture of Mercer Island scouting for several years. It has traditionally been held in May, but conflicts with many other scouting events and the prospect of warmer water temperatures and better weather prompted us to move the event to September two years ago. As we did last year, all teams re-start together at each of the five waypoints, which makesthe relay even more exciting for participants and spectators (best total rowing time still wins). The relay is a great opportunity to develop and practice a traditional scouting skill. Come join Troop 457 for a superb outing for your unit!
