Welcome to the world of Cub Scouting! The Cub Program is for boys in the first through fifth grades. This is an exciting time in a boy's live: everything is a new adventure, they're filled with enthusiam, and Parents and other Adults in leadership positions are respected and admired. To be fully trained for your job in the Pack, the first step is FAST START TRAINING. This is an individual training done either by videotape or interactively on the Internet. Either way, it's short and gives you a basic understanding of Cubbing. To take the video course, either ask your Pack's Cubmaster or Pack Commissioner to get you the Cub Scout Fast Start Video. You need watch only the Introduction and the part specific to the job you'll be doing. The next step in your training is NEW LEADER ESSENTIALS. This is an overview course that looks at the Scouting program from Cubs to Boy Scouts and on through Venturing to discover its values, goals and methods. You'll have and overview of the organization of the Scouting program and the resources available to you. This course is about 90 minutes in length and is scheduled frequently throught the year. You may register for New Leader Essentials online at the same time you register for your Leader Specific Training.
NEW LEADER SPECIFIC TRAINING gets right to the heart of your particular job. Separate sessions are available for Tiger Cub Leaders, Cub Scout Den Leaders, Webelos Den Leaders, Cubmasters & Assistants and for Pack Committee Members. The course is about three hours in length and is taught by experienced Scouters who have served in your position and can give you the what's, why's and how's of your job, as well as answer any questions you may have. Another training available is DEN CHIEF TRAINING. A Den Chief is a Boy Scout who volunteers to work with a Cub Scout Den. He helps the Den Leader in running Den Meetings, teaches skits, leads songs and generally encourages the boys. His role in teaching Cubs about Boy Scouts and their activities encourages boys to stay in the program as they go into the 6th grade and become elgible to be Boy Scouts. One of the essentials for maintaining a safe Cubbing program is YOUTH PROTECTION TRAINING. This program teaches Leaders, Parents and boys about the dangers of abuse and of the Boy Scouts policies and procedures to protect children. Ongoing training is available monthly through the CUB SCOUT ROUNDTABLE. The Roundtable each month is based on the theme for the upcoming month as found in the Cub Scout Program Helps. Ideas are offered on program ideas, crafts and activities as well as ceremonies, songs and games. Each Roundtable features breakout sessions for Tiger and Cub Den Leaders, for Webelos Den Leaders and for Cubmasters and Pack Committee Members to offer ideas and allow for interchange on needs specific to each job. Cub Roundtables are held the Second Thursday of each month (except July) from 7:30 to 9:00 PM at the LDS Stake Center, Ambaum and 142nd in Burien. Check this page for the next Roundtable.
