New Boy Scout Leader Training
Welcome New Leaders!

Welcome to the world of Boy Scouting! The Boy Scout Program is for boys who are in sixth grade or higher. It is a boy centered program teaching leadership, self reliance, outdoor skills and values to last a lifetime. The Boy Scout program began in America in 1910 and continues today to be a vital proving ground for boys to learn and practice skills that last a lifetime.
To be fully trained for your job in the Troop, the first step is FAST START TRAINING. This is a short individual training, usually done by videotape, to give you a basic understanding of Boy Scouting. To take the video course, either ask your Troop's Scoutmaster or Training Chair, or your troop's Unit Commissioner to get you the Boy Scout Fast Start Video. You need watch only the Introduction and the part specific to the job you'll be doing.
The next step in your training is NEW LEADER ESSENTIALS. This is an overview course that looks at the Scouting program from Cubs to Boy Scouts and on through Venturing to discover its values, goals and methods. You'll have and overview of the organization of the Scouting program and the resources available to you. This course is about 90 minutes in length and is scheduled frequently throughout the year. You may register for New Leader Essentials online at the same time you register for your Leader Specific Training.
NEW LEADER SPECIFIC TRAINING gets right to the heart of your particular job. Separate sessions are available for Scoutmasters/Assistant Scoutmasters and for Troop Committee Members. The course is taught by experienced Scouters who have served in your position and can give you the what's, why's and how's of your job, as well as answer any questions you may have. You'll leave prepared to run a successful Boy Scout Program.
Since outdoor skills are a large part of the Scouting movement, Scoutmaster training includes an INTRODUCTION TO OUTDOOR LEADER SKILLS. This training gives hands on experience with hiking, camping and outdoor activities with special emphasis on Safety. Courses are announced by mail, at Scout Roundtables and in the Totem (Chief Seattle Council Newsletter).
One of the essentials for maintaining a safe Scouting program is YOUTH PROTECTION TRAINING. This program teaches Leaders, Parents and boys about the dangers of abuse and of the Boy Scouts policies and procedures to protect children. Ongoing training is available monthly through the BOY SCOUT ROUNDTABLE. The Roundtable each month presents information on upcoming events and activities in the District and Council, specific information on conducting a quality Scouting program and program ideas such as outing venues, Advancement and Merit Badge information and motivational tips. Scout Roundtables are held the Second Thursday of each month (except July) from 7:30 to 9:00 PM at the LDS Stake Center, Ambaum and 142nd in Burien. Check on this page for the next Roundtables.
